Sustainability Story

Goulburn Valley Libraries National Tree Day Storytime

Goulburn Valley Libraries provides library services to the communities in the municipalities of Greater Shepparton City Council, Moira Shire and Strathbogie Shire. Goulburn Valley Libraries are working towards a sustainable future and reducing our carbon footprint through achievable and measurable actions. Through various initiatives and in partnership with our councils we promote eco-friendly practices.

Program Summary:
At the Shepparton Library in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council and Planet Ark Australia, National Tree Day is celebrated every year on the 31st of July. National Tree Day is celebrated as a theme for Rhyme Story Time. Children attending rhyme and story time each receive a seedling to plant at home with the aim to raise awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability.

The program took shape after initial consultations with Greater Shepparton City Councils Environment Officer as a way to educate and foster the next generation on environmental issues, in a positive and fun way. Childrens and Youth Librarian Emma Kennedy performs story time featuring books about the environment, children learn to value and appreciate the beauty and importance of trees and the natural world. Books read at the National Tree Day storytime sessions include, Last Tree in the City by Peter Carnavas, The Little Koala who lost his tree by Jedda Robaard. Activities included resources from the Planet Ark website and a seed growing activity. Over 100 trees were gifted to families during story time at the libraries of the Greater Shepparton City Council Together, with the library, community members and businesses Greater Shepparton City Council reached the significant goal of 24,000 local native plants. The plantings have provided biodiversity benefits for woodland birds through shelter and food.
